Madagascar, the ocean country, has numerous assets, and is also running development programmes which may provide models for other ocean nations. The Madagascan people are mobilising today in order to manage their marine resources and preserve their future. And, by playing to its strengths, that is its rich and exceptional oceanic natural resources, the country is seeking to develop its economic activities, which include fishing, aquaculture, tourism, sea freight and the salt industry. The stories of the men and women of Madagascar who are changing things now offer a number of lessons. It is often said that sustainable development is only for rich countries, yet Madagascar, one of the world’s 10 poorest nations, has understood that without sustainable development, there is no future.
